2 Kings continues with a sermon called ‘A Careless Walk’ which chronicles how good intentions are no substitute for consistent character and action.

Watching the movie musical The Music Man introduces viewers to the apparently authentic Iowan expression ‘Great Honk!’
It reminds me of the phrase ‘Hokey Sailors’, which I associate with the central Darling Downs in Queensland.

Famously The Music Man‘s creator Meredith Wilson was supposed to have earned more money from the Beatle’s cover of the song Till There Was You than he did from the Broadway and Theatrical releases of the whole show.

Here’s the youthful purity of Paul McCartney’s vocals on the Beatle’s rendition.

Why aren’t they playing an NRL game at Kougari Oval?
Why is wondering where the games will be played more interesting than the games themselves?

Schmigadoon is a series in which two contemporary characters find themselves in a town that appears to be a movie musical.
It’s amusing. It’s clear that the creators and performers love the form; their understanding of the culture that gave rise to the form is more clouded. Which makes it less than an homage, not quite a parody; what it actually is may become clearer as the series goes along. [edit. The first season ends in a satisfying way.]

This was the scene that made me laugh out loud, though.

as a bonus, here’s With All Your Heart, one of the scenes that most closely affectionately reflects the sources being referenced.
