I’m posting on Friday this week because there were no Thursday games with both competitions stretching their rounds to include ANZAC Day next Tuesday.
NRL was nearly perfect last week. Penrith. What was I thinking?
AFL was more scrappy with Melbourne and Collingwood very disappointing. (What’s new?)

Footy Tipping 2017 – NRL Round 7 / AFL Round 4

Good Friday football starts in the AFL this year, joining the NRL’s long-term usage of the day.
It’s not really a problem for me.
Good Friday is a holy day of choice for Christians, so what everyone does on that date is up to them.
Both competitions are struggling to produce formlines.
And the current table toppers sit somewhat unconvincingly.
We’ll see.

NRL (last round 4/8; season tally 29/48)
Canterbury
Easts
Brisbane
Penrith
Melbourne
Canberra
Saint George
Penrith
Paramatta

AFL (last round 5/9; season tally 18/27)

Footy Tipping 2017 – NRL Round 6 / AFL Round 3

The week before both competitions enter the Easter long weekend rounds. More on that next weekend.
Very weird to see the AFL table standing at eight sides with two wins, eight side with no wins and two with one win / one loss.
Results this weekend could see some tremors at some proud clubs.
The NRL was pretty average. It will be interesting to see Melbourne’s season narrative revolves around a last hurrah before a significant changing of the guard.

NRL (last round 5/8; season tally 25/40)
Brisbane
Canterbury
Penrith
Lottoland Sea-eagles
Canberra (really need to prove they’ve not pretenders)
North Queensland
New Zealand
Melbourne

AFL (last round 8/9; season tally 13/18)
Sydney
Greater Western Sydney
Richmond
Geelong
Adelaide
Western Bulldogs
Saint Kilda
Essendon
Hawthorn

Footy Tipping 2017 – NRL Round 5 / AFL Round 2

We’re up and running in earnest.
NRL went relatively well. New Zealand seem to have proved they won’t win an away game this year. Canterbury seem jealous of the fact that Wests managed to get their coach sacked after only three games.
AFL had a few unexpected results. Both the South Australian teams surprised. Gold Coast demonstrated they’ve wasted every advantage given them in their establishment. Hawthorn may be a precursor to a wider display that they, Sydney and Geelong can’t defy history and remain top eight (or four) competitive indefinitely.

NRL (last round 6/8; season tally 20/32)
Brisbane
Easts
North Queensland
Cronulla
Canberra (really need to prove they’ve not pretenders)
Melbourne
Gold Coast (New Zealand will probably win, but at least Gold Coast will be trying)
Saint George (see previous tip comment)

AFL (last round 5/9; season tally 5/9)
Richmond
Sydney (No slight on the ‘dogs intended.)
Adelaide
Greater Western Sydney
Essendon
West Coast
Geelong
Melbourne
Port Adelaide

Footy Tipping 2017 – NRL Round 4 / AFL Round 1

This week we welcome back AFL.
NRL may have had something of a record set with a coach sacked after three weeks of the season. The Board of the Club in question seem to be defending this as just another step forward in their master plan.
I don’t what that says about the other nine clubs in the sixteen team competition who have managed to start the year with a one win / two loss record. Ten out of sixteen. That’s not good.
AFL will be interesting, three or four clubs are not really competitive, and then the rest are in varying degrees ascending or descending which may keep things interesting. Somehow I don’t think the final eight will be concrete one-third of the way through this year’s fixture, though the top three or four may be.

NRL (last round 4/8; season tally 14/24)
Easts
Penrith
Brisbane
Canterbury
Cronulla
North Queensland
Melbourne
New Zealand

AFL (last round /; season tally /)
Richmond
Western Bulldogs
Melbourne
Sydney
Hawthorn
Gold Coast
West Coast
Greater Western Sydney
Geelong

Footy Tipping 2016 – NRL & AFL Season Roundup

So, zero out of two. Who’d have thought?
Both Western Bulldogs and Cronulla have certainly rewarded their fans for decades of support and particularly crisis situations of recent years.
Sydney and Melbourne will continue to be there and thereabouts in the coming season.
Last year’s winners North Queensland and Hawthorn couldn’t sustain their success, with NQ suffering something of a let down after the high of their initial premiership and time catching up with Hawthorn more quickly than most expected (though after three years at the top understandably).
Surprisingly NRL tips seem a little higher than 2015, with AFL about the same.
I don’t know why the games counts are not the same.
I’m not going back to check.
Obviously I wouldn’t win any tipping competitions in either code.

2015
NRL (last round 1/1; season tally 123/193)
AFL (last round 1/1; season tally 143/209)
2016
NRL (last round 0/1; season tally 130/202)
AFL (last round 0/1; season tally 144/205)

See you next year.

(and in honour of our two ‘Cinderella Story’ competition winners, here’s the greatest Cinderella story victory of the all)
