The preaching and hearing of the word of God is spiritual warfare. I’ve mentioned in the past that some people expect preaching to make them feel bad. But feeling bad is not the same thing as experiencing change. The preaching and hearing of God’s word is a call to arms. It calls you to change, directs you to change, and points you to the one in whom change is embodied.

From Will Willimon:

In preaching, you’ll know it’s not the gospel if it purports to offer a formula for living with and loving Jesus without discomfort. In the face of all my homiletic attempts to make Jesus more comforting and comfortable, I hear Jesus ask, “What about the word cross do you not get?”

William H Willimon, Leading With The Sermon, Fortress Press, 2020, pg 120.

Moses led God’s people toward the experience of living with God’s blessing and with God present among them. Jesus is the fulfillment of what Moses was leading God’s people toward.

For those unable to join us at MGPC, the service will be live-streamed. The video is available at our website and youtube channel.

This rendition of Psalm 103 features lyrics by Kate Bluett which I presume have been set to music and sung by Keiko Ying.

East from west is not the farthest that our sin is cast away.
Limitless as heaven’s marvel, greater still is mercy’s sway.
Come creation, all God’s harvest, earth and sky and night and day:
Bless the Lord who made and guards you. Bless the Lord, my soul, I say!

So, this weekend both codes have two games, the winners of which will play preliminary finals, and the losers of which will conclude their seasons.
The only spanner in the works last weekend were Collingwood, (or perhaps West Coast whose inconsistency has cost them dearly). Collingwood are now pretty much precisely where they would want to be in terms of a pathway to a premiership.
Brisbane are clearly the real deal.
Again, I don’t see any upsets this weekend.
