The preaching and hearing of the word of God is spiritual warfare. I’ve mentioned in the past that some people expect preaching to make them feel bad. But feeling bad is not the same thing as experiencing change. The preaching and hearing of God’s word is a call to arms. It calls you to change, directs you to change, and points you to the one in whom change is embodied.

From Will Willimon:

In preaching, you’ll know it’s not the gospel if it purports to offer a formula for living with and loving Jesus without discomfort. In the face of all my homiletic attempts to make Jesus more comforting and comfortable, I hear Jesus ask, “What about the word cross do you not get?”
