He Is Born The Divine Christ Child was playing as occasional music before worship at MGPC this morning.
It is an old favourite with my daughter and I always wondering what the merry playing of a bagpipe and oboe would really sound like.
Nothing says ‘Party’ like some oboe and bagpipe apparently.

Children’s voices carry the lightness and joy of the lyrics.

The lyrics:
Refrain
He is born, the divine Christ Child;
play the oboe and bagpipes merrily!
He is born, the divine Christ Child;
sing we all of the Savior mild.
1
Through long ages of the past,
prophets have foretold His coming;
through long ages of the past,
now the time has come at last!
Refrain
2
O how lovely, O how pure
is this perfect Child of heaven;
O how lovely, O how pure,
gracious gift to humankind!
Refrain
3
Jesus, Lord of all the world,
coming as a Child among us;
Jesus, Lord of all the world,
grant to us Thy heavenly peace.
Refrain

Q & A 105
Q What do we pray for in the fifth petition?
A In the fifth petition, which is, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors, we pray that God, for Christ’s sake, would freely pardon all our sins;1 which we are the rather encouraged to ask, because by his grace we are enabled from the heart to forgive others.2

*1 Psalm 51:1-2, 7, 9; Daniel 9:17-19; 1 John 1:7.
*2 Matthew 18:21-35; Colossians 3:13.

Long Ago Prophets Knew by Fred Pratt Green is a newer hymn, despite sounding like its been around forever.
Sung to Green’s tune PERSONENT HODIE, it again contrasts the expectation of God’s deliverance with the modest and unknown nature of Jesus’ birth.

This youth choir rendition shows the sense of joy that the hymn expresses in both lyric and melody.

The lyrics:
1
Long ago, prophets knew
Christ would come, born a Jew.
Come to make all things new;
Bear his People’s burden,
Freely love and pardon.
Refrain
Ring, bells, ring, ring, ring!
Sing, choirs, sing, sing, sing!
When he comes,
When he comes,
Who will make him welcome?
2
God in time, God in man,
This is God’s timeless plan:
He will come, as a man,
Born himself of woman,
God divinely human.
Refrain
3
Mary, hail! Though afraid;
She believed, she obeyed.
In her womb God is laid;
Till the time expected
Nurtured and protected.
Refrain
4
Journey ends! Where afar
Bethlem shines, like a star,
Stable door stands ajar.
Unborn Son of Mary,
Saviour, do not tarry!
Refrain.
Ring, bells, ring, ring, ring!
Sing, choirs, sing, sing, sing!
Jesus comes!
Jesus comes!
We will make him welcome!

Such is the value and enduring power of Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf, to reject it in favour of anything else can only be an act of contempt towards God’s grace.

For those unable to join us at MGPC, the service will be live-streamed.
