Ray Ortlund writes about encouragement, observing that it is not supplemental to Gospel knowledge and experience but that it is an essential expression of Gospel knowledge and understanding.
Encouragement is the experiencing the Gospel lived out.

From Ortlund’s article at Desiring God.

Encouragement is what the gospel feels like as it moves from one believer to another. The ministry of encouragement, therefore, isn’t optional or just for people with a knack for it. Real encouragement has authority over us all. It deserves nothing less than to set the predominant tone of our churches, our homes, our ministries.

When the ministry of encouragement is allowed its actual authority, and it takes over and sets the tone in a community, that is how people do walk out of church. They leave thinking, “Man alive, I needed that! It makes me want to live for Christ this week! And I can’t wait for next Sunday!” And the word for that is revival.

I love Fernando Ortega’s simple heart-felt expression in song.
He has released a four track EP of Christmas themed songs – Lo, How A Rose E’er Blooming.
We’re big fans of Edward Caswell’s See Amid The Winter Snow and Fernando’s rendition does not disappoint.
The verse order may vary a bit and there may be another verse in some versions, but these five are in most popular collections.

The lyrics:
1
See, amid the winter’s snow,
born for us on earth below,
see the tender Lamb appears,
promised from eternal years.
Refrain
Hail! Thou ever-blessed morn!
Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!
Sing through all Jerusalem,
“Christ is born in Bethlehem.”
2
Lo, within a manger lies
He who built the starry skies;
He, who throned in height sublime,
sits amid the cherubim!
Refrain
3
Say, ye holy shepherds, say,
what your joyful news today;
wherefore have ye left your sheep
on the lonely mountain steep?
Refrain
4
Sacred Infant, all divine,
what a tender love was Thine;
thus to come from highest bliss
down to such a world as this!
Refrain
5
“As we watched at dead of night,
lo, we saw a wondrous light;
angels singing ‘Peace on earth’
told us of the Savior’s birth.”
Refrain

Each year the minister’s association in Mount Gambier hosts a carols event on behalf of the community.
It showcases the fact that we have a remarkable group of very talented people who live in our small city.
This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions it was decided that the event would be pre-recorded and live-streamed instead of conducted live in the usual outdoor location.
While everyone missed the experience of gathering as a community, this presentation style enables these remarkable performances to be appreciated more for themselves unencumbered by the factors that present themselves in the outdoor live presentation.
It also showcases the skills of yet more groups of people who have put together the video and sound recordings, along with the overall editing and production of the video.

Watch, listen, and enjoy this showcase of truly local talent, all gathering in celebration of the birth of Jesus.

People Look East is a hymn of quite recent composition.
Eleanor Farjeon’s lyrics and jaunty melody provide a reflection of her bohemian background and authorial skill that makes the imagery of the poetry rather than sentiment do the work.

This choral rendition features a beautiful vocal prelude and then verses 1,2,4, and 5 of the hymn.

The lyrics:
1
People, look east. The time is near
Of the crowning of the year.
Make your house fair as you are able,
Trim the hearth and set the table.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the guest, is on the way.
2
Furrows, be glad. Though earth is bare,
One more seed is planted there:
Give up your strength the seed to nourish,
That in course the flower may flourish.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the rose, is on the way.
3
Birds, though you long have ceased to build,
Guard the nest that must be filled.
Even the hour when wings are frozen
God for fledging time has chosen.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the bird, is on the way.
4
Stars, keep the watch. When night is dim
One more light the bowl shall brim,
Shining beyond the frosty weather,
Bright as sun and moon together.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the star, is on the way.
5
Angels, announce with shouts of mirth
Christ who brings new life to earth.
Set every peak and valley humming
With the word, the Lord is coming.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the Lord, is on the way.

Words: Eleanor Farjeon.
Music: Besançon Carol, arranged.
