Westminster Confession of Faith – Lord’s Day 1

Chapter 1 – Of The Holy Scripture (Paragraphs 1-3)

I. Although the light of nature, and the works of creation and providence, do so far manifest the goodness, wisdom, and power of God, as to leave men in excusable; yet are they not sufficient to give that knowledge of God, and of his will, which is necessary unto salvation; therefore it pleased the Lord, at sundry times, and in divers manners, to reveal himself, and to declare that his will unto his Church; and afterwards for the better preserving and propagating of the truth, and for the more sure establishment and comfort of the Church against the corruption of the flesh, and the malice of Satan and of the world, to commit the same wholly unto writing; which makes the holy Scripture to be most necessary; those former ways of God’s revealing his will unto his people being now ceased.

January 1 in the twelve days of Christmas can focus on Mary.

Oddly, Mary is not particularly present in the Christmas Carol tradition.
This may have been because the popular Christmas songs came from the protestant traditions, and Mary was consciously (or unconsciously) not focused upon.

Gabriel’s Song (The Angel Gabriel From Heaven Came) was featured a couple of weeks ago. Here’s another rendition, this time from Sting.

Our concluding sermon from 2 Corinthians leaves us with the provides an appropriate New Year exhortation to Gospel Self-Examination. .

For those unable to join us at MGPC, the service will be live-streamed.

December 31 in the twelve days of Christmas marked in various places with celebrations of Hogmanay, New Year’s Eve, Saint (Pope) Sylvester.

I’m staying up just so I can see 2021 gone.
I know the song choices this year have been more idiosyncratic than usual. It’s been a singularly abnormal Christmas.

Over The Rhine’s music has reflected the tone of this December.

New Year’s Song looks forward with hope, not ignoring present sadnesses and absences, but knowing that each morning and new year brings us closer to the time those sadnesses and absences will be memory themselves.

Toast the ghost of another year past
Just a little New Year’s song
Happy New Year everyone
It came upon a midnight clear
Another brand new year
New mercy comes with every morning
The unexpected with no warning
For loved ones who’ve gone on before
Sing me Auld Lang Syne
