December 31 in the twelve days of Christmas marked in various places with celebrations of Hogmanay, New Year’s Eve, Saint (Pope) Sylvester.

I’m staying up just so I can see 2021 gone.
I know the song choices this year have been more idiosyncratic than usual. It’s been a singularly abnormal Christmas.

Over The Rhine’s music has reflected the tone of this December.

New Year’s Song looks forward with hope, not ignoring present sadnesses and absences, but knowing that each morning and new year brings us closer to the time those sadnesses and absences will be memory themselves.

Toast the ghost of another year past
Just a little New Year’s song
Happy New Year everyone
It came upon a midnight clear
Another brand new year
New mercy comes with every morning
The unexpected with no warning
For loved ones who’ve gone on before
Sing me Auld Lang Syne
