Westminster Confession Of Faith – Lord’s Day 8

Chapter 5 – Of Providence (Paragraphs 1-4)
I. God, the great Creator of all things, does uphold, direct dispose, and govern all creatures, actions, and things, from the greatest even to the least, by his most wise and holy providence, according to his infallible foreknowledge, and the free and immutable counsel of his own will, to the praise of the glory of his wisdom, power, justice, goodness, and mercy.
II. Although in relation to the foreknowledge and decree of God, the first cause, all things come to pass immutably and infallibly, yet, by the same providence, he orders them to fall out according to the nature of second causes, either necessarily, freely, or contingently.
III. God, in his ordinary providence, makes use of means, yet is free to work without, above, and against them, at his pleasure.
IV. The almighty power, unsearchable wisdom, and infinite goodness of God, so far manifest themselves in his providence, that it extends itself even to the first Fall, and all other sins of angels and men, and that not by a bare permission, but such as has joined with it a most wise and powerful bounding, and otherwise ordering and governing of them, in a manifold dispensation, to his own holy ends; yet so, as the sinfulness thereof proceeds only from the creature, and not from God; who being most holy and righteous, neither is nor can be the author or approver of sin.

This week’s sermon, The Weeds shows us that the presence of evil does not mean the Kingdom has not come, or is not growing, but that God’s people should have patient assurance as we wait for the fulfilment of God’s Kingdom purpose.

For those unable to join us at MGPC, the service will be live-streamed.
The video is available at our website and youtube channel.

Song: As You Go

Tears may not fill ours eyes physically, but the sadness that abides provides an altered perspective that remains.
Rather than a clouded vision there are things perceived that were always there, but never observed.

I shall look at the world through tears.
Perhaps I shall see things that dry-eyed I could not see.

Nicholas Wolterstorff, Lament For A Son, Spire 1989, pg. 26

A friend of mine from Mount Gambier (Port MacDonnell, actually) was in the Christian Reformed Bookstore in Brisbane a week or two ago and text messaged me asking if I wanted anything.
There’s really no quick way of knowing what’s exactly in that particular bookstore, so I passed on the opportunity.

Upon his return he handed me a copy of Nicholas Wolterstorff’s Lament For A Son.
Turns out he was able to select something more perfect than anything I could have asked for.

Nicholas Wolterstorff lost one of his five children, a twenty-five year old son, through an accident.
Lament For A Son is a monograph of reflections on that loss.
It is a modern classic, that I’d heard of and forgotten.

Thanks for good friends.
