How The Green Blade Riseth is a bit late as an Easter hymn, but it’s too good to leave for another ten or eleven months.
For a lot of reasons tonight, both personal and general, my heart does feel ‘wint’ry’, and the words of the final stanza are a great comfort and encouragement.

When our hearts are wintry,
Grieving, or in pain,
Jesus’ touch can call us
Back to life again,
Fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been:
Love is come again like wheat that springeth green.

This version by Joseph Bradshaw from Covenant Presbyterian Church is a fresh take.

This is rendition of the classic version.

The lyrics:
1.
Now the green blade riseth
From the buried grain,
Wheat that in the dark earth
Many days has lain;
Love lives again, that with the dead has been:
Love is come again like wheat that springeth green.
2.
In the grave they laid Him,
Love Who had been slain,
Thinking that He’d never
Wake to life again,
Laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen:
Love is come again like wheat that springeth green.
3.
Forth He came at Easter,
Like the risen grain,
Jesus who for three days
In the grave had lain,
Quick from the dead my risen Lord is seen:
Love is come again like wheat that springeth green.
4.
When our hearts are wintry,
Grieving, or in pain,
Jesus’ touch can call us
Back to life again,
Fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been:
Love is come again like wheat that springeth green.

Love lives again, that with the dead has been:
Love is come again like wheat that springeth green.

Confession: when I first heard Iris Dement singing Leaning On The Everlasting Arms during the end credits of True Grit I hated it.
A lot.
My daughter still ribs me about it.
Because I came to fall in love with Iris’ vocals of that song and all the songs on Lifeline, her Appalachian style album of hymns and spiritual songs.
That Glad Reunion is a song that is on my mind today.
I have another reunion to look forward to.

There will be a happy meeting in Heaven, I know
When we see the many loved ones we’ve known here below
Gathered on that blessed hilltop with hearts all aglow
That will be a glad reunion day.

A glad day, a wonderful day,
A glad day, a glorious day
There with all the holy angels and loved ones to stay
That will be a glad reunion day.

When we live a million years in that wonderful place
Basking in the love of Jesus, beholding His face
It will seem but just a moment of praising His grace
That will be a glad reunion day.

A glad day, a wonderful day,
A glad day, a glorious day
There with all the holy angels and loved ones to stay
That will be a glad reunion day.

What do we do when we encounter stories in the Bible that simply seem to be random and odd?
Do we treat them as moralistic fables or jumping off points to other, easier to understand, places?
No.
Instead we can appreciate each of these stories for the way they all join together to form a cohesive picture of God’s grace and love, a deep and textured message for peoples who may feel far away and beyond the reach of God’s power.
