Man Of Sorrows (The Real One) – Sunday Songs

Okay, after last week’s entry, this is the real Man Of Sorrows.
Phillip Bliss’ lyrics and melody are classic.
There have been a few retuned versions of this, but none of them seems to reached a popular level approaching the original.
It’s one of those cases where the original tune doesn’t really need replacement.

The lyrics:
1
“Man of Sorrows,” what a name
For the Son of God who came
Ruined sinners to reclaim!
Hallelujah! what a Savior!
2
Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
In my place condemned He stood;
Sealed my pardon with His blood;
Hallelujah! what a Savior!
3
Guilty, vile, and helpless, we,
Spotless Lamb of God was He;
Full redemption—can it be?
Hallelujah! what a Savior!
4
Lifted up was He to die,
“It is finished!” was His cry;
Now in heaven exalted high;
Hallelujah! what a Savior!
5
When He comes, our glorious King,
To His kingdom us to bring,
Then anew this song we’ll sing
Hallelujah! what a Savior!

This is nice rendition. Finding one without vocal gymnastics and added refrains was pretty tough. Even this one finishes up with a few extra bits.

Man Of Sorrows – Sunday Songs

We trialled Man Of Sorrows tonight. Having transposed it down from the original key, we’ll be singing it in D.
I’ll apologise for not having posted the hymn Man Of Sorrows already, and for this beating it on the list.
The lyrics are good, the structure is sound.
We’ll be adding it to our list.

The lyrics:
1.
Man of Sorrows, Lamb of God
By His own betrayed
The sin of men and wrath of God
Has been on Jesus laid
2.
Silent as He stood accused
Beaten, mocked, and scorned
Bowing to the Father’s will
He took a crown of thorns
Chorus.
Oh that rugged cross, my salvation
Where Your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out “Hallelujah!”
Praise and honour unto Thee
3.
Sent of heaven, God’s own Son
To purchase and redeem
And reconcile the very ones
Who nailed Him to that tree
Chorus.
Oh that rugged cross, my salvation
Where Your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out “Hallelujah!”
Praise and honour unto Thee
Bridge.
Now my debt is paid
It is paid in full
By the precious blood
That my Jesus spilled
Now the curse of sin has no hold on me
Whom the Son sets free, oh is free indeed!
Chorus.
Oh that rugged cross, my salvation
Where Your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out “Hallelujah!”
Praise and honour unto Thee
4.
See, the stone is rolled away
Behold the empty tomb
Hallelujah, God be praised
He’s risen from the grave!
Chorus.
Oh that rugged cross, my salvation
Where Your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out “Hallelujah!”
Praise and honour unto Thee
Praise and honour unto Thee

Man Of Sorrows – The Surrender Version

This version of Man Of Sorrows by The Surrender evokes a big Civil Wars sound.
Which is fine by me, especially since the Civil Wars aren’t using that sound anymore.
Two ways to listen:
