In addition to remember the dinner party at Bethany, the Wednesday of Easter week is also known as ‘Spy Wednesday.’
Coincidentally, in addition to reading about this earlier today, one of the residents of an aged care residential home I took a service at this afternoon asked if I knew it was Spy Wednesday. His readings today had touched on this.
Why? by Michael Card, does not confine itself to the betrayal but considers it as part of a grouping of seemingly incongruous details that are part of the Easter narrative.
Card’s song observes that the incongruity serves to illuminate the ultimate incongruity: redemption accomplished through the humiliation and death of God’s Son.

Why did it have to be a friend
Who chose to betray the Lord
Why did he use a kiss to show them
That’s not what a kiss is for
Only a friend can betray a friend
A stranger has nothing to gain
And only a friend comes close enough
To ever cause so much pain.
