I told my daughter that I’d probably get my hair cut after our State church’s Assembly meeting this week.
‘Why,’ she said, ‘would you wait? Wouldn’t you rather get a hair cut before the Assembly, so you can look good?’
Which reveals the essential difference between women’s and men’s haircuts.
Women go and get a haircut because they want their hair to look perfect that day, knowing it will never be quite as good as that on succeeding days.
Men go and get a haircut knowing that it will look its best in about five to nine days. And we’d appreciate it if no-one looked at us or commented on said haircut for the duration of that time.

Tragically, when I get a haircut, the positive comments about it are generated by relief that it has happened, not appreciation for how it looks.

I’m with your daughter on this one.

Does that make me less a man?
