Footy Tipping 2017 NRL/AFL Season Wrap Up

It’s the week after the Grand Finals and season 2017 is done and dusted.
Adelaide spent all year convincing me they could win, and all Grand Final showing me why I doubted them. But then, Richmond who I doubted more showed that they had the goods on the day.
Some people may have thought that North Queensland could emulate Richmond’s achievement, but that would involve Melbourne being equivalent to Adelaide. And that was never going to be.

An odd season in many ways. Apart from Melbourne no NRL side (North Queensland’s heroic finals run notwithstanding) no other team showed marked improvement, and many actually seemed to decline. It will be interesting to see how NQ go when Thurston and Scott return.
In the AFL no side seemed to really dominate. There are a number of good teams but no great ones at the moment. Lots of teams will fancy their chances and they’ll be looking for strategic top-ups of personnel to have a crack at the 2018 flag.

I finished the year three wins up in the NRL, but a sad fifteen down in the AFL.

So, the last rites:
NRL (last round 1/1; season tally 133/201)
AFL (last round 0/1; season tally 129/207)

Footy Tipping 2017 NRL/AFL Grand Finals

Here we are for the last games of both competitions for 2017.

There have been some surprises, both in performances and lack thereof through the year, but there’s no doubt the teams playing both games are worthy of being there and worthy of lifting their respective trophies should they win.

Hard especially to pick between Adelaide and Richmond either on grounds of performance or sentiment. Both have demonstrated great resilience in adversity.

North Queensland have also shown amazing resilience, while Melbourne’s consistent level of brilliance is remarkable.

NRL (last round 1/2; season tally 132/200)
Melbourne

AFL (last round 2/2; season tally 128/206)

Footy Tipping 2017 – NRL / AFL Preliminary Finals

Well, North Queensland and Geelong surprised last weekend, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they won this weekend. Geelong are unlucky to play Adelaide though, but I think of the three NRL teams remaining North Queensland would like their chances against Easts.
It’s still Melbourne’s and Adelaide’s to lose. Because I just don’t believe in Richmond.

NRL (last round 1/2; season tally 131/198)
Melbourne
Easts

AFL (last round 1/2; season tally 127/204)
Adelaide

Footy Tipping 2017 – NRL / AFL Semi-Finals

The fact I got one out of four in the NRL and two out of four in the AFL last week should have me feeling like there were lots of upsets.
But I don’t.
The teams that are there are all deserving, though apart from Sydney I don’t think that any teams from the bottom halves of the respective top eights will survive.

NRL (last round 1/4; season tally 130/196)
Brisbane
Paramatta

AFL (last round 7/9; season tally 126/202)
Sydney

Footy Tipping 2017 – NRL / AFL Quarter-Elimination Finals

Well, it’s down to the business end of things. Two teams from each competition will finish up this weekend, while two from each will get a massive boost in their chances by winning.
Melbourne and Adelaide are favourites, though Sydney and Easts (though I haven’t picked them) are credible threats.

NRL (last round 6/8; season tally 129/192)
Brisbane
Melbourne
Manly
Cronulla

AFL (last round 7/9; season tally 125/198)
Adelaide
Geelong
Sydney
Port Adelaide

Footy Tipping 2017 – NRL Round 26 / AFL Pre-Finals Bye

AFL are having a week off because some teams were getting in the habit of resting players in the final round a couple of years ago. Not that it actually helped those teams win grand finals.
Melbourne found a novel way to miss the finals after being in the eight for sixteen of the twenty-three weeks of the season. Western Bulldogs will spend the off-season wondering if their premiership was simply a fluke.
In NRL the final round offers numbers of permutations for everything except the minor premiership. Saint George will get in the top eight if they win on Sunday, and by then they’ll know which team they’ll leapfrog over.
Last weekend Brisbane and Paramatta apparently enjoyed the Bledisloe Cup game so much they re-enacted it.
Three top eight sides lost, two to other top eight teams. Manly got out of jail. Somehow.

NRL (last round 5/8; season tally 123/184)
Brisbane
Parammata
Easts
Penrith
Melbourne
Cronulla
Saint George
Wests

AFL (last round 7/9; season tally 125/198)

Footy Tipping 2017 – NRL Round 25 / AFL Round 23

It’s the traditional time of year where coaches get unceremoniously dumped, rather than the early round nonsense.
It’s also the time of year where a few upset results turn up as players and teams that have barely performed all year find the incentive of a contract for next year produces something closer to the form that has eluded them the rest of the season.
The last round of the AFL. Looks like Essendon will make up the numbers in the eight. Richmond have their destiny in their own hands to finish fourth or maybe third with a good win.
