  1. Financial analogy was used by Church Fathers, referring to the Christ as Redemptor Mundi.
    When people pay back a pawnbroker, they redeem their goods. Original Sin, in dominant Christian Theology, had in hock the souls of all the world – all but Jesus’ immaculately conceived Mother, if you’re Roman Catholic – until the world’s mortal slate was wiped clean by the Divine Redeemer.
    There’s a lot of poetry in the early writers.
