Those of us who know that Betamax was the superior format over rival VHS probably paused wistfully over the news that Sony will cease producing blank tapes for the ageing machines still in service early next year.
Most of you will probably be hard pressed remembering when video stores had two different types of cassettes featuring movies for rental.
Others of you will probably be hard pressed remembering when movies came on cassettes of any type. (That being said there are still some VHS recordings in our church foyer.)
One of the better headlines stated that “Sony is finally killing its ancient Betamax format.”
This for a technology that premiered forty years ago and which saw its last mainstream public movie release for home twenty years ago.
‘Ancient’.
