Another ‘lullaby’ style carol is Still, Still, Still, an Austrian carol from the Salzburg region which has been translated into English settings.
Nathan Clark George recorded a German language version on Still, his second Christmas album.
There are a number of variations in the English versions.
This set of lyrics is associated with a setting by John Rutter.
1.
Still, still, still,
The night is calm and still
The Christ-child in his crib lies sleeping
Angels round him watch are keeping
Still, still, still,
The night is calm and still
2.
Sleep, sleep, sleep,
Sweet Jesus softly sleep
While Mary sings and gently holds you
Safely in her arms enfolds you
Sleep, sleep, sleep,
Sweet Jesus softly sleep
3
Joy, joy, joy
Glad tidings of great Joy
For through God’s holy Incarnation
Christ is born for our salvation
Joy, joy, joy
Glad tidings of great Joy
This is the Cambridge Singers’ rendition.
Thankyou so much for posting the words to this carol, I discovered this carol today at a time when I really needed both the words and the lullaby tune. It’s been a year of sadness and fear, ending with the difficult birth of my grandson, now doing well, so we all need a meaningful lullaby this Christmas! Thankyou. I wish everyone peace and restful healing sleep this Christmas, here’s your lullaby……
