Not every lesson we learn from great figures in Christian history flows from their strengths.
Here’s a link to a sobering and challenging post about John Wesley’s marriage to Molly Vazeille.
It’s not a hatchet job.
All of our heroes have imperfections.
In some ways their attainments make their failings all the more confusing and deflating.
We can celebrate and seek to emulate their positives, while their negatives help to keep us humble in our strivings.
Here’s part of the final challenge:
I love John Wesley’s passion to preach the Gospel. I just wish he would have been obedient to it in this major area of his life. This is greatly to be lamented, not celebrated. As Christians we must value our home life and honor the most important earthly commitment we have made (assuming you have made a marriage commitment). The question(s) I have for the one reading this post is this: Do you value your work more than your marriage? If you are unmarried and plan to marry, what precautions do you plan to take to guard your marriage?
For those who are single the same challenge pertains to other relationships.
Do they serve the person involved, or do they exist to further your sense of calling?
