I studied (and failed) preaching at the then Queensland Presbyterian Theological Hall in the early 1990s.
Back then the class motto was ‘iron sharpens iron’, or something like that.
If you mention that phrase around the guys who studied there in that period you’ll probably find a few automatically hit the floor whimpering in the fetal position.
Anyway, Phil Campbell is teaching preaching at the now QTC, and he posts the course class notes and hosts discussions on a dedicated blog while the course is running.
The material for lecture one has just been posted.
The name of the blog is Confessions Of A Reformed Bore.
Anyone who preaches, aspires to preach, or wants to improve/refresh their preaching would be well served downloading those notes and giving them some heed.
Or maybe you can study them so you can offer your preacher more constructive feedback.
It’s an odd name for the blog. I would have thought “reformed” involved some sort of change…
You should also check out the program for Preaching Week – which I believe is on the QTC website – it’s in March and features the aforementioned preaching lecturer, Gary Millar, Steve Cree, David Jones, and a guest appearance from Colin Buchanan (I kid not). Should be good.
now that you mention it, are these the confessions of a bore who has reformed,or rather one who is reformed and boring, or is there something about either state in which he has been duplicitous and for which he needs to confess?
Thanks for the heads-up about the Preaching Week.
Keep an eye out for the Melbourne PTC pastoral theology week featuring David Jones.
