Apart from the variability of the coffee-ish flavoured beverages available at the cafes which adjoin petrol stations on the high-ways, a major disappointment is the state of the cake cabinets.
And I blame the cane-toad of the cake cabinet: the muffin.
Unless the establishment has some sort of bakery, muffins have come to dominate proceedings. Easy to store, long-lasting and available in many forms, the muffin, that introduced intruder to the cake cabinet, has displaced such native species as the custard tart, vanilla slice, jam and cream donut and others.
Having been content at first to share space, it has now come to dominate to the exclusion of the others, save for a slice or two of that other more baked introduction, the mud cake (perhaps the dung beetle of the cake cabinet).
There seems little hope that these natives will return, having been relegated to the more protected environment of the cake shop or bakery. So, it remains the responsibility of the traveller to seek them out.
