Steve Cree, lead pastor at Creek Road Presbyterian posts on their blog about the book Your Church In Rhythm.
No, it’s not about liturgical dance, but about the process of discerning not only the best actions to pursue, but also the best times to pursue them. There are many pursuits that are worthwhile, valuable and even necessary, but not all can be pursued at any one time, or can be pursued continually.
From the post:
I am really enjoying reading ‘Your Church in Rhythm’ by Bruce B. Miller. It’s about “the forgotten dimensions of seasons and cycles” in the life of a church. It’s a book that gets you asking: What time is it? What season are we in? What is now? What is later?
We need to discern ‘chronos’ time from ‘kairos’ time. Chronos time is about the more predictable things that look similar from year to year: e.g. the seasons Growth Groups meet, the key recurring events on the calendar etc. Kairos time is harder to define. It’s about the seasons God brings unexpectedly (e.g. the floods earlier this year, or our recent role helping our brothers and sisters at Norman Park). Kairos time is also about the more proactive aspect of setting priorities. It’s about discerning what should be ‘priority one’ now. And what can wait.
