As you celebrate Jenny Geddes’ Day, remember, none of us are perfect.
Some days I’m the one hurling the stool at practices that needlessly interpose themselves between people and Jesus.
Other days the stool is being hurled at me. Because my heart is a factory for idols; because I’d like it if everyone was happy; because sometimes I’ll confuse culture with biblical imperative and give undue prominence; and othertimes I’ll mistake a biblical imperative for a cultural preference and not treat it with the significance it deserves.
I’m not celebrating a cranky woman and advocating throwing furniture as a means of protest.
What I want to advocate is biblical authority over human invention and pragmatism.
As God continues to work on my heart by the means of His Word I am learning the essence of what Geddes’ action (whether she really knew it or not) represents: biblical simplicity in worship and life that openly affirms our continuing need of Jesus as Saviour and Lord.
