Our local ABC announcer just referenced a historical custom that involves a flitch (side) of bacon and married couples.
The tradition involves giving ‘a flitch of bacon to married couples … if they can satisfy the Judge and Jury of 6 maidens and 6 bachelors that in ‘twelvemonth and a day’, they have ‘not wisht themselves unmarried again’.
The practice can be traced back to 14th century England.

The Dunmow Flitch Trials are conducted every four years, with the next ‘hearings’ being scheduled for July 14, 2012.
