New Redemption Song from Over The Rhine.
If it depended on us to compose redemption’s song we’d never get it right.
Instead we have a song that has been given to us, and our lives become its echo.

Lord, we need a new redemption song
Lord, we’ve tried, it just seems to come out wrong
Won’t You help us please, help us just to sing along
A new redemption song, a new redemption song
Lord, we need a new redemption day
All our worries keep getting in the way
Won’t You help us please, help us find the words to pray
To bring redemption day, to bring redemption day
Lord, we need a new redemption song
Lord, we’ve tried, it just seems to come out wrong
Won’t You help us please, help us just to sing along
A new redemption song, a new redemption song

Bethlehem from Over The Rhine.
The more normal people try to make Christmas look the less normal I feel.

Oh little town of Bethlehem
Be still tonight be still
Cradled by a crescent moon
Born under a star
Sometimes there’s no difference
Between a birthmark and a scar
Oh little town of Bethlehem
With your sky so black
May God impart to human hearts
The wisdom that we lack
Should you chance to find
A hope for all mankind
Oh little town of Bethlehem
Be still tonight be still

Let It Fall is another track from Over The Rhine (which I’d featured years ago when it was released).
This year the sentiments in the song are close to home.
The temptation is to try and hold everything together, as if that represents some sort of victory or progress.
However it all works out over the next few days, it’ll be okay, because that’s what it will be.

‘Cause rain and leaves
And snow and tears and stars
And that’s not all my friend
They all fall with confidence and grace
So let it fall, let it fall
Have you been carin’ too much
How this one ends
Y’know it’s not the kind of fight
That you lose or WIN
When you’re down so low
You feel the imprint of the ground
On skin
Look around
Breathe in

It’s the 21st of December – How To Make Gravy Day.
This 2021 version has just been released.
The song’s theme of separation and looking forward to reunion is resonating with a wider meaning after the events of the last couple of years.

Here’s hoping all the reunions that you’re longing for this Christmas happen, or at least have the promise of happening, if not this year, then a future one to come.
And if they can no longer happen, then I hope memories are a comfort – and an encouragement to make more memories with those who are still here.
