Footy Tipping 2019 – NRL Round 22 / AFL Round 22

The business end of the season is actually the business end of the season in the AFL. If Brisbane can win at home against Geelong they’re a very good chance of coming first. If they lose they shouldn’t do worse than third. Games against Geelong and Richmond over the next two weeks should prepare them perfectly for finals.
In the NRL it looks as if Easts are finally waking up. Too late to stop Melbourne getting the minor premiership, but as Easts well know that trophy doesn’t really count for much. And Canberra just aren’t quite there yet.

Footy Tipping 2019 – NRL Round 21 / AFL Round 21

Each week seems to bring a couple of random losses in each competition by teams that should be winning.
Seems like Easts might finally have gotten serious in the NRL, and this week’s game against Canberra should provide some insight into where both teams are really at.
In the AFL Brisbane could use a win that would boost their percentage. I think second and third, and maybe even first, will be decided on percentage. If they lost that would be moot.

NRL (last round 6/8; season tally 96/152)
Brisbane
Manly
Cronulla
Saint George
Paramatta

Canberra

AFL (last round 7/9; season tally 107/171)

Footy Tipping 2019 – NRL Round 20 / AFL Round 20

Another underwhelming week in both competitions. No team in either comp is stamping themselves as the outright obvious pick.
Both Melbourne and Geelong have comfortable leads at the head of their respective tables, but I’m not sure either will win a grand final.
The NRL seems to be waiting for Easts to get out of second gear, I can’t see any other teams playing in the last game of the season; and the AFL has a similar feel about West Coast. Collingwood and Richmond should be capable of more, the other teams in the eight not so much.

NRL (last round 6/8; season tally 90/144)
Wests
Canberra
Cronulla
Melbourne
Manly
Penrith
Souths
Easts
Paramatta

Footy Tipping 2019 – NRL Round 19 / AFL Round 19

The Brisbane Lions are second on the AFL ladder after 18 rounds.
Let that sink in.
Regardless of what happens from here that pretty much wraps up coach of the year.
And I was wrong about the Western Bulldogs and the ‘sack a coach’ winning ploy.
I think any underdog team in a grand final should seriously consider sacking their coach in the week leading up to the game. Apparently it’s guaranteed they’d win.

NRL (last round 6/8; season tally 84/136)
Cronulla
Newcastle
Souths
Paramatta
Brisbane
Melbourne
Easts
Canberra

AFL (last round 5/9; season tally 92/153)

Footy Tipping 2019 – NRL Round 18 / AFL Round 18

Nothing much to report on this week.
Coaching turnovers continue with one each in the AFL and NRL.
I think there may be another in the AFL, but I think the NRL may be done. Then again the NRL teams that turned over coaches last year were not really down and out.
And Brisbane have put themselves in an AFL ladder position where they have to be tipped. Which makes it hard. And I’m not expecting either St Kilda or Gold Coast to get sacked coach motivated victories this week.

NRL (last round 5/8; season tally 78/128)
Brisbane
Cronulla
Penrith
Easts
Canberra
Souths
Melbourne
Paramatta

AFL (last round 6/9; season tally 87/144)

Footy Tipping 2019 – NRL Round 17 / AFL Round 17

State of Origin is over for another year.
Queensland acquitted themselves well, NSW deserved their favouritism, and I’m somewhat pleased for Mitchell Pierce. For some reason redemption stories appeal to me. There should be some cracking games in the years ahead.

Back in regular NRL and AFL things now move toward the finals.
I did not expect to see Brisbane Lions in their comp’s top four at this stage.

Things don’t get underway until tomorrow, but here are the tips anyway.

NRL (last round 3/4; season tally 73/120)
Penrith
Newcastle
Souths
Brisbane
Melbourne
Easts
Paramatta
Canberra

AFL (last round 5/9; season tally 81/135)
West Coast
Sydney
Hawthorn
Essendon
Adelaide
Geelong
Richmond
Western Bulldogs
Port Adelaide

Footy Tipping 2019 – NRL Round 16 / AFL Round 16

State of Origin is usually a time when leading clubs slip due to representative players not being available.
But that doesn’t seem to be as much a factor this year, due to both the general inconsistency of most sides and the fact that the lower teams are pretty woeful.

AFL are already in a situation where ten teams are playing for the final eight spots, but it’s hard to envision anything but the seven of the teams currently in the eight making it to finals.

NRL (last round 4/8; season tally 70/116)
Melbourne
Easts
New Zealand
Cronulla

AFL (last round 5/9; season tally 76/126)
Collingwood
Essendon
Richmond
Adelaide
Geelong
West Coast
