The late Eva Cassidy didn’t so much cover songs as reinterpret them.
Even on a hymn/spiritual as generic as How Can I Keep From Singing, she preserves the essence, adding something that’s just her but in a way that keeps the focus on the song, not the performer.
This is not as pared back and acoustic as some of her better known works, but even with lush instrumental and vocal backing her voice remains front and centre.
