So, Wilder Mind by Mumford & Sons.
I’m about three listens in.
Having produced a second album, Babel, that was as close to a second half of their debut, Sigh No More, Mumford & Sons go for a completely different instrumental palate for third album Wilder Mind.
From furiously strumming banjos and folk acoustic stylings, they have stepped to an electric and drum driven soundscape.
The chords of opening track Tompkins Square Park are as much a declaration as they are an introduction.
Constants are Marcus Mumford’s vocals and lyrics that express a dis-satisfied yearning for something more.
It is interesting and well done, but I don’t think it stands out.
The band stood as leaders in the modern folk genre, Wilder Mind is assured and listenable, but I can’t hear the hooks scattered through their first two efforts.
As comparisons with Cold Play and U2 will emerge, there’s not a lot here that you find yourself singing along with.
Time will tell.
Still listening.
More later.
