Songs Of Praise aired their 2013 episode listing the popularly voted ten favourite hymns for the year.
Here they are:
1. How Great Thou Art
2. In Christ Alone
3. Be Still, For The Presence Of The Lord
4. Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind
5. Here I Am, Lord (I, The Lord Of Sea And Sky)
6. And Can It Be
7. Abide With Me
8. Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer
9. Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace
10. The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Ended

I haven’t used Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace, and sparingly use Here I Am, Lord and Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind.
Sadly, The Day Thou Gavest doesn’t really work in the morning, so it’s going to slip out of a lot of church’s song choices.
The other six are very much on our active list.
Of some interest is the absence of Amazing Grace and Psalm 23/The Lord’s My Shepherd, both staples at funerals and services where people from non-church backgrounds use hymns.
Also it seems that Shine, Jesus, Shine is dipping in popularity.
It seems to me that all the songs on this list share the quality that they’re great to sing, as well as their lyrical content.

Glad to see the end of Shine, Jesus Shine. Sad about The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Ended. But of course, it will live on in my memory for a long time šŸ˜‰

  2. John Dekker's avatar John Dekker says:

No “And did those feet” either. It’s a more modern list than I expected, although only one is from this century. “In Christ Alone” is from 2001, while “Be Still, For The Presence Of The Lord” is from 1986, and “Here I Am, Lord” from 1981.
