How many times have you heard a sermon or been in a Bible study where the usage of the word αββα [abba] in the New Testament means ‘daddy’.
Been there, done that. More than once.
Rich Leonardi observes:
If I had a nickle for every time I’ve heard the chestnut that the Aramaic word “Abba,” which Jesus uses in the New Testament to address His heavenly Father, translates to English as “Daddy,” I’d have a vacation paid for to the south of France. It is one of the enduring post-Vatican II myths that members of the “New Catechetics” school have used to “immanentize” God.
