Robert Murray McCheyne (or M’Cheyne) is something of a 18th century Presbyterian legend.
At the Desiring God Conference John Piper continues his custom of delivering a biographical appreciation of a significant Christian figure from the past by delivering an address on M’Cheyne entitled ‘He Kissed the Rose and Felt the Thorn: Living and Dying in the Morning of Life Robert Murray McCheyne.’

All of you 20 somethings take notice about the power of a brief life.
Piper provides this brief summary:
A student till he was 22, an assistant pastor for a year, and a senior pastor for six years. And as far as any unusual events in that six-year pastorate are concerned, only two would stand out. He made an eight-month trip to Israel in 1838, and his church experienced an extraordinary awakening while he was away, which lasted in some measure until McCheyne died four and a half years later.
But, as Piper’s essay shows the legacy of the totality of a life can be far greater than what we imagine the sum of its parts to be.
