Matthew Smith records with a group called Indelible Grace. He also produces solo projects. The style is contemporary hymn-based music.
In ‘Watch The Rising Day’ Smith takes the lyrics of old hymns, provides some sensitive modernisation of the lyrics and sets them to his own music, which I’d describe as a ‘folk-rock’ style. (Folk because the original hymn lyrics follow that style, so even contemporary music sounds different when played to those settings.)
On his blog, Worship Matters, Bob Kauflin provides a review of the album that I think is pretty accurate, so I’ll point you there instead of trying to find different ways of saying the same thing. The music is not revolutionary, but it is very well composed and played. The lyrics cover a far greater range of experience and expression than you’ll hear in a lot of contemporary sounding Christian music.
As a bonus, Kauflin’s review post offers a code, that when used on Smith’s website, offers a 25% discount on the purchase price of the pre-release packages of the album.
Smith’s website offers a package where you can get and immediate download of the album (with bonus tracks) along with a physical copy of the CD and other content mailed to you. With Kauflin’s discount applied it cost just under $20AUS. Another package offers a vinyl version. Go to this link.
I haven’t been able to locate whether the scores for these are available for purchase or not. Indelible Grace’s material is, so perhaps it will be out there soon.
In any case, the player below means you can listen to the whole thing and make up your own mind.
I recommend tracks 11; 3 and 9 as a starting point, but you can listen to the whole thing.
So, do yourself a favour.
(And hopefully this will help clear the music from my previous post out of your head.)
