You know, there’s something to be said for Christian songs that can be sung by any Christian at the top of their lungs with a bunch of other Christians.
That is all.
This brings back memories of church camps with Wynnum Presbyterian. We had a small spirit duplicated booklet with all sorts of these songs, most of which were not in our current hymnbook and, therefore, we did not sing at church. Consequently we didn’t oversing them, and when we did we had a ball.
Hold the note on the second syllable of the word ‘yonder’ in the third line until half the group pass out from lack of oxygen.
I don’t expect sensitive, new age, grungy, candle-waving, brewed coffee drinking Christians to get this, but I’m on holidays. So there.
You can find these lyrics and other resources at Timeless Truths. It’s a pretty useful site that has sheet music and other materials relating to public domain hymns.
1.
When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more,
And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair;
When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
Refrain:
When the roll is called up yonder,
When the roll is called up yonder,
When the roll is called up yonder,
When the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
2.
On that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise,
And the glory of His resurrection share;
When His chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
3.
Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun,
Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care;
Then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
In addition, to further my claim that I could pastor a country and western church, here’s a YouTube featuring Mr Johnny Cash singing verses 1 and 3.
