Jon Acuff maintains a nice balance of insight, personal openness and humour (most often self-deprecating) at Stuff Christians Like.
A recent post starts on the subject of what’s cool and transitions to what he calls: ‘Litmus Test Questions’:
I don’t know if you do this. I don’t know if you have questions you ask of new Christians you meet, but I promise you that I do know the most common “Cool Christian Litmus Test.” Want to hear it? When you meet a new Christian, at some point, ask them some form of this question:
“Hey, want to go grab a beer?”
Ohhhh, classic. If they say no instantly, if they shriek back a little like you’ve asked if they want to rub the belly of the possum you found in your backyard, they’re probably not cool. But if they say, “Sure, let’s do it,” you’ll know they’re cool.
To see a couple more examples, read the rest of Acuff’s post here.
I’ve got a few statements that serve a similar function.
- ‘We purchased a drum kit last year’.
- ‘We recite a unison affirmation of faith, such as the Apostle’s Creed, each week’.
- ‘Don’t feel you have to follow the Bible reading in your Bible, do what the people in the Bible did, listen to it.’
drum kits in church are monstrously uncool
Any chance we can talk about that over a beer/red wine/coffee one day?
ha ha!
