Matt Perman, quoting from ‘The Top Ten Mistakes Leaders Make’.

1. We replicate the poor leadership habits of others.
2. We lead as we were led.
3. We aren’t born with leadership skills [note: skills and talent are different]
4. We lack good models and mentors.
5. We lack formal training.

1, 2, 4 and 5 are all about the people we are influenced by.

    Interesting.

Have you got a book or 2 that you can recommend on leadership, Gary? Bearing in mind that we are Presbyterians and not Anglicans;)

      heh.
I think my leadership training revolved around the principles of ‘If you preach it, they will come’ and mastering the standing orders to chair meetings.
Bryan Chapell of Covenant Seminary is in the process delivering a series of talks for Covenant’s Winter/Spring 2010 Men’s Leadership Breakfast. The audio is being posted online here.
“In this seven-part series, Dr. Bryan Chapell teaches from the book of Daniel and shares principles to help us live for Christ in the midst of circumstances which are often difficult.” I can’t testify yet to the revelvance, but anything by Chapell will be good.
More seriously regarding leadership, email Bruce Meller: bmeller@pcnsw.org.au.
Bruce recommended a bunch of things that he’s read.
Not a lot by Presbyterians, most of it was secular, but if Bruce thinks they’re okay you’ll learn something.

Thanks Gary. I’ll check out Chapell. I am very impressed with his stuff so far. He’s written the best book on preaching that I’ve come across.
