I can’t believe I haven’t posted Create In Me A Clean Heart before.
It is a simple, pure and faithful rendition of King David’s song from Psalm 51.
I think the shortened verse and chorus that is popularly sung is an abbreviation of a more complete rendition of the Psalm by the late Keith Green.
(I knew the song, but have Chris Perona to thank for introducing me to Keith Green.)
The passion with which Green sang these verses carries the plaintive yet appreciative cry of David’s heart for a forgiveness that he did not deserve.
I’m expecting that we’ll use this for the morning congregation, most probably as our song of confession and assurance.
This link has a version with more verses, attributed to Green.
The most popular version contains these lyrics:
Verse.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a right spirit within me.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a right spirit within me.
Chorus.
Cast me not away from Thy presence;
Take not Thy holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation;
And renew a right spirit within me.
