Is there any way to escape punishment and be brought back into God’s favour?

Yes, to satisfy his justice, God himself, out of mere mercy, reconciles us to himself and delivers us from sin and from the punishment for sin, by a Redeemer.

    As the first English creed of childhood has it, He descended into Hell. The third day, He rose again from the dead.
    Mediaeval theologs didn’t allow Our Lord time off in the 30 to 36 hours He spent down there. He absolved the bad and embraced the Pagan and Gentile good in general. Socrates, Plato and Aristotle were mentioned in despatches, all good souls back to Adam and Eve were freed from infernal bondage.
