Last Sunday’s sermon focussed on Acts 1:9-26.
Again, the emphasis is on the resurrected Lord Jesus, and the fact that our mission is his mission, not simply our sentimental continuation of his memory.
It is His work, not simply our notion of how He’d like us to remember Him.
Added to that is the reality of the ascension, with the authority and power that Jesus sitting at the right of the Father conveys.
We are carrying out a work of obedience to His authority; seasoned by the fact that we are His friends. This speaks of a purpose and priority in our mission.
The disciples pray for that which has been promised, and they pray before they carry out actions Jesus has left them to do.
We remember that our activities and decisions are more than the sum of our resources and capabilities.
They are expressions of Jesus work of growing the Kingdom, and we don’t just work on behalf of Him, we work as expressions of His power and will.
Finally, there is the expectation of His return.
Our mission and ministry is finite, Jesus will return; we are not filling in time until he returns, we are purposely working toward what He desires to return to.
