Having written about my satisfaction seeing that the practice of getting everyone to stand up and greet each other during church was listed as the number one thing which puts of newcomers in a list published by Thom Rainer, I can only quietly fist-pump to find out the post went viral and Rainer has published two follow-up posts about the overwhelming response of those who dislike the custom.
Firstly, Rainer expresses his surprise at the passion of those who don’t like it, and attempts to get some background responses from Twitter. “According to the Twitter responses and comments on the post, many guests really don’t like it, so much so that they will not return.” From Twitter: “I would rather have a root canal than be subjected to a stand and greet time.”
This second post features a selection of the ‘greatest hits’ comments from the original post.
A favourite of mine:
“It’s not that I don’t want to participate in a meaningless, obligatory greeting; it’s just that I don’t want to participate in a meaningless and obligatory greeting.”
