Ed Stetzer concludes his reflections on Australia by proposing that the future spiritual climate of the USA may look pretty much like the present spiritual climate of our nation:

Yet, I do see America’s possible faith future in Australia’s present — a happy people largely unconcerned about the Church while pursuing the betterment of society.
Note that I did not say that they were unconcerned about spiritual things, but they just do not see the church (and, more importantly, its gospel) as the answer.
I dare say that most Americans would aspire to the kind of society that Australia has created. That’s why, perhaps, four of the most livable cities in the world are in Australia. Simply put, it is the kind of place an American would love–and I think I barely was able to get Donna to return back to Tennessee.
But, the goodness of life can distract from the truths of the gospel. Those without, trapped, and stuck know it — and often turn to Jesus. But what about the society that has everything?
That’s what struck me most — these people don’t think they need Jesus…

I think this is a compellingly well articulated analysis and summary of contemporary Australian culture.

Here are Stetzer’s prayer points for Australia:

  1. I pray that churches will prioritize biblical fidelity and discerning cultural engagement to tell a satisfied world that they are missing the most important thing.
  2. I pray that Christians will learn from one another and see they need one another as they engage a society that does not know or care that they are there.
  3. I pray that pulpits will proclaim the truths of the scriptures even when those truths are unpopular.
  4. I pray that churches will be planted that preach the gospel, reach the lost, and multiply into more churches.
  5. I pray that the Lord will send more workers into his Australia harvest.
