Just because I’m giving up needless and counterproductive asceticism for Lent doesn’t mean I’m giving up good music.
Songs For Lent is a concept album produced by a collective named New York Hymns and which is based on the stations of the cross (don’t get me started) by using words from hymn writers such as Charles Wesley and Isaac Watts, along with a few contemporary pieces, and sets them to new music.
Their Noise Trade page says their music should appeal to people who like Red Mountain Church, Indelible Grace, Bifrost Arts, and Sojourn Music, and I think they’re correct.
Of the long list of names involved in the project I recognise Melanie Penn and Karl Digerness.
Given the album’s theme this a soundtrack for reflection and devotion.
Which can, and should be done at any time of year.
As a download from Noise Trade you can have it free or offer a tip, the proceeds of which go to a nominated charity.
Recommended.
