Having posted Graham Kendrick’s What Love Is This? / Amazing Love a few weeks ago it seems like a good idea to include another Kendrick song Meekness And Majesty today.
I learned these songs pretty close to one another in mid-nineties (yeah, I was a bit late on songs from the 80’s, and as I’ve written before Shine, Jesus Shine meant I didn’t pay much attention to Kendrick in particular).
The lyrics are a collection of phrases that refer to the aspects of Christology that is summarised in the chorus refrain ‘O what a mystery, Meekness and majesty. Bow down and worship For this is your God, This is your God.’ I like the soaring sustained notes of the chorus which contrast to the 1-2-3, 1-2-3 rhythm of the verses.
The lyrics.
1.
Meekness and majesty,
Manhood and Deity,
In perfect harmony,
The Man who is God.
Lord of eternity
Dwells in humanity,
Kneels in humility
And washes our feet.
Chorus.
O what a mystery,
Meekness and majesty.
Bow down and worship
For this is your God,
This is your God.
2.
Father’s pure radiance,
Perfect in innocence,
Yet learns obedience
To death on a cross.
Suffering to give us life,
Conquering through sacrifice,
And as they crucify
Prays: ‘Father forgive.’
Chorus.
3.
Wisdom unsearchable,
God the invisible,
Love indestructible
In frailty appears.
Lord of infinity,
Stooping so tenderly,
Lifts our humanity
To the heights of His throne.
Chorus.

Here’s Kendrick and choral accompaniment in tall skinny video mode. Sounds alright, though.
