Christopher Hitchens, noted atheist, writes about his ongoing experience of throat cancer, the most recent effect of which has been loss of speech.
Now dependant upon writing as his sole ‘voice’ Hitchens reflects on having to converse through prose and what the loss of a faculty so innate to his being means to him.
The article raises interesting issues for those of us whose vocation (and self-identity) depends hugely on our ability to speak.
