Voting is now open for the (Australian) Macquarie Dictionary’s Word Of The Year for 2010.
Previous winners (since the inception of the award in 2006) are:
2006 Muffin Top
2007 Pod Slurping
2008 Toxic Debt
2009 Shovel-ready
The list of previous winners suggests that this is really the phrase of the year, rather than a word.
If you go and vote you’ll be provided with choices among various categories which include: Agriculture; Art, Literature and Film; Business; Colloquial; Communications; Computing; Crops; Environment; Fashion; Eating and Drinking; General Interest; Health; Internet; Politics; Psychology; Social Interest; Sport; and Technology.
Now I read a lot of current affairs and material online and I was bemused about how many of the nominated words (word phrases) that I’d never even read or heard before, let alone encountered as part of the popular expression.
You’d almost have thought they made most of them up.
In the interests of full-disclosure I voted for the one word (phrase) that I’d heard others use: ‘plate-up.’ (We used to call this serving or ‘dishing-up’ food)
Thanks Master-Chef.
