A fellow named Wintley Phipps introduces us to what he believes is most famous black spiritual melody in the world, shows us why he believes it, and then sings the song.
Sadly, there’s no reason whatsoever to believe that Newton wrote the lyrics with that melody in mind. But it is moving to think that those lyrics have found their most enduring association with a melody evocative of the slave experience.
