This morning at mgpc we sang ‘Nothing But The Blood Of Jesus’
The song borrows verses from ‘What Can Wash Away My Sin’, and adds a refrain along with more verses.

It’s uptempo and the timing takes little learning. That being said, the original hymn is fairly bright and takes a little bit of learning as well. It was fairly ‘poppy’ in its own way. It is not as if a stately old piece has been completely altered. This is a contemporary reinterpretation of the original. The repetition of the phrase ‘Nothing but the blood of Jesus’ means that the lyrics don’t really flow in either version. The song is really more collection of affirmations.

If you have a group who like singing material with a bit of bounce, but want solid lyrics, this is the go. It can be slowed down for a more sedate group. (Like mornings at mgpc)

Here are the lyrics (the sheet music, mp3 tracks and CD can be purchased from EMU music)
1.
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
For pardon, this I see:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
For cleansing, this my plea:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
Chorus
How deep the store of Jesus’ love
How rich the flow that cleanses us
How great the debt I owed,
Now it’s nothing by the blood of Jesus
2.
What can break the power of death?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
Life and hope unto the earth
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What satisfies the law?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What opens heaven’s door?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
3.
Nothing can for sin atone
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
Nothing good that I have done
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
This is my hope and peace:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
This is my righteousness:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

Here are the original lyrics from cyberhymal for comparison (all lyrics: Robert Lowry):
1.
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Refrain
Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
2.
For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
3.
Nothing can for sin atone,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
4.
This is all my hope and peace,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
This is all my righteousness,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
5.
Now by this I’ll overcome—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus,
Now by this I’ll reach my home—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
6.
Glory! Glory! This I sing—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus,
All my praise for this I bring—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Here’s a YouTube of the revision. As I said it moves along, so following it with the lyrics to read is helpful.

I wanted to find a normal rendition of the original hymn, which is harder than it sounds, Enter the Gaithers. Can’t get more traditional than that. This doesn’t contain all the verses and it’s a little slow.

Next week: Matt Redman’s revision of this same hymn.

    Yeah. Don’t like the EMU version. I think that sometimes their stuff is actually too hard to sing. The syncopation is excessive. We sing quite a few of their stuff and it isn’t always a success.

    Sovereign Grace and the Getty’s write songs that are much more singable.
