The old saying used to go that people would have ‘roast minister’ after church on Sunday. The minister can save them the trouble though, if he is stupid enough to spend four hours outside on the first sunny day for five months and roast himself (on Monday).
Anyway, enough about stupid pastors.
Last week or so the October/November issue of New Directions turned up on the Presbyterian Church of Queensland website. You can download it (in four pdf parts) right here.
I’m not going to do a huge commentary.
I was pleased to read about Ron Pilkington receiving the Order of Australia. Ron is a true Christian gentleman who has fruitfull and faithfully served His Lord in the Presbyterian Church of Queensland. Often church histories emphasise ‘reverends’. An elder of the church, Ron is second to no-one in the impact which his contribution has bourne.
Many of my early sermons were preached in the Graceville Presbyterian Church. To be honest, the plan was to close it down and move the congregation down the road. Reading about an outreach night featuring international food and attended by 80 people warms my heart. Sometimes being wrong is a good feeling.
Robert Benn, moderator general of the Presbyterian Church of Australia, relates some stories of his recent trip to Africa. Any story told by a Benn is always well told and worth hearing or reading.
So, whether it’s theological reflection, congregational news, social care, world mission or other interesting bits and pieces, go and read New Directions.
