Actually I’ve watched Mark Driscoll preach and I’ve never seen him use a pulpit. (Maybe a lecturn.) This time he even wore a suit and tie.
The place where he preached was on the Crystal Cathedral’s Hour of Power.
Robert Schuller’s ministry began in a Reformed context and depending on your point of view he has either dispensed of lots of bath water or babies along the way.
Giving Mark Driscoll an opportunity to preach about Jesus (with another to come, apparently) is a point in his favour as far as I’m concerned.
You can find a transcript here.
Look for a video here. Admire the gown that the fellow who introduces Driscoll is wearing.
Reformed evangelical theology is turning up in the strangest places.
Interesting, Reformed theology turning up in the pulpit of a member church of the Reformed Church in America. There may be hope. 🙂
Welcome.
I don’t think it ever occurred to anyone to characterise Mark Driscoll as the Robert Schuller of the early 21st century. (It certainly never would have occurred to me.)
It reminds me of an account I read of Bill Hybels watching a group of young people glaze over while studying Louis Berkhoff’s Summary of Christian Doctrine and purposing what became Willow Creek as a response.
Reformed theology has certainly been taken in many directions.
