New Scientist magazine’s website features an online version of an article entitled ‘Ten Things We Don’t Understand About Humans’. Despite the article’s title they really try to have a crack at explaining them anyway. The ‘Things’ they don’t understand about the human body are interesting, as are the principles they bring to bear in providing answers to that which they (professedly) don’t understand.
George Pitcher, religion editor of the UK Telegraph writes a response: ‘Why are you reading this? New Scientist is powerless to explain’ in which he tries to provide some of his own questions that are beyond understanding. He doesn’t seem to have any issue with the original article itself, but expresses disappointment that the magazine doesn’t ask the ‘big questions’. Just how big his questions are is up for debate.
Happy to take up the challenge New Scientist respond to Pitcher in a follow-up article: ’13 Things That Do Make Sense’. Links are provided to archived articles considered relevant to his questions. I haven’t followed them all.
They show a little more humour than might be considered usual in these exchanges. (The links all worked when published)
Keeping up with these sorts of subjects is worthwhile to sharpen specific aspects of our understanding of society at large.
The final word? “I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14)
