The Australian National Dictionary Centre’s Word Of The Year choices seem a bit random.
Last year they chose ‘bitcoin’ over the far more popular usage ‘selfie’.
It seems to be more whatever interests the staff at the ANDC or something drawn out of a hat.
At least choosing ‘shirtfront’ as their 2014 word of the year meets some sort of criteria for achieving a reasonable level of prominence at a popular level during the year.
And again they’ve managed to include a couple of choices that as a someone who keeps up with popular culture I’m surprised that I’ve never heard of. ‘Ned Kelly beard’?
