Carl Trueman paints a dystopian vision of what Christian life would be like if the primary association of Christians to the life and fellowship of local congregations gave way to an evangelical industrial complex of alliances, coalitions, pushes, networks, conferences and podcasts; and then gives thanks for the constant assurances which he receives that nothing like that is actually occurring.
It reminds me of a story I heard about an applicant to a Bible college, a resident of a major city, who, when asked to provide a reference from the pastor of his local church responded that he did not attend a church, but received all his teaching online.
The future is never as far away as we imagine.
